History of Costa Rican Coffee

Seeds of Change: Coffee Arrives in Costa Rica

Coffee was introduced to Costa Rica in the late 1700s, with the first Arabica plants arriving from Cuba. The country's fertile volcanic soil and ideal climate quickly proved perfect for cultivation. By the early 1800s, coffee had become one of Costa Rica’s most promising crops, gaining support from the government, which encouraged its growth through land incentives and tax breaks. What began as a small-scale agricultural experiment soon evolved into a national enterprise.

Golden Grain: Coffee as Economic Engine

In the 19th century, coffee transformed Costa Rica’s economy. It became the country's primary export and a driving force behind the development of infrastructure, including roads, ports, and even the construction of the National Theater in San José. Wealth generated from coffee trade helped shape a stable middle class and fostered social and political progress. Costa Rican coffee was particularly prized in Europe for its high quality and smooth flavor, further boosting the country's international reputation.

Preserving Purity: A Legacy of Arabica

Recognizing the importance of quality, Costa Rica made a bold move in 1989 by banning the cultivation of Robusta coffee, becoming the only nation in the world to legally protect Arabica-only production. This decision cemented its status as a producer of some of the finest coffee globally. Today, Costa Rican coffee continues to be celebrated for its bright acidity, clean taste, and sustainable farming practices — a legacy of excellence rooted in centuries of tradition and care.

Facts About Costa Rican Coffee

Arabica Only

Costa Rica is a haven for highest quality coffee, in fact, growing anything less is actually illegal. Costa Rica stands alone in the world as the only country where it is legally mandated to grow only 100% Arabica coffee. This national commitment to quality ensures that every bean cultivated in its rich volcanic soil meets the highest standards of flavor and refinement. By prohibiting the cultivation of lower-grade Robusta, Costa Rica has built a global reputation for producing some of the smoothest, most aromatic Arabica coffees on earth.

Ideal Conditions

Nestled between the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, Costa Rica offers near-perfect conditions for growing high-quality coffee. The rich volcanic soil, high altitudes, steady rainfall, and balanced tropical climate all contribute to the beans' vibrant acidity and clean, complex flavor profile. These natural advantages allow farmers to cultivate beans with remarkable consistency and character, season after season.

Strictly Hard Bean

Much of Costa Rica’s coffee is classified as Strictly Hard Bean (SHB), meaning it is grown at elevations above 1,200 meters (4,000 feet). At these altitudes, cooler temperatures slow the bean’s maturation process, allowing more time to develop dense, flavorful beans with heightened sweetness and complexity. SHB coffees are highly prized in specialty markets for their richness and clarity of flavor.

Fair Trade

Costa Rica is also a leader in sustainable and ethical coffee farming. Many Costa Rican plantations are certified Fair Trade or participate in cooperatives that ensure farmers receive a fair price for their beans. This commitment to equity and environmental stewardship supports local communities and preserves the delicate ecosystems where coffee is grown.

World-Renowned

Thanks to its unmatched quality and responsible production practices, Costa Rican coffee remains some of the most valuable and sought-after in the world. From connoisseurs to casual coffee lovers, its reputation for purity, flavor, and consistency continues to grow. With every cup, you're not just tasting coffee—you’re experiencing the result of generations of dedication, innovation, and respect for the land.
